Introduction

My name is Father John Kingsbury, C.Ss.R., D.Min. and I am pastor of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Annapolis, MD.  The “C.Ss.R.” after my name means I belong to a Religious Congregation commonly known as the Redemptorists.  Our Religious Congregation was founded by St. Alphonsus Liguori in Italy in 1732 and we first came to this country in 1832.

This blog concerns my interests in Biblical Coins and I take care of the Redemptorist Biblical Coin Collection.  A small section of this collection is now on exhibit at the Charles Carroll House in Annapolis next to our Rectory (109 Duke of Gloucester). Charles Carroll was the only Roman Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence and spoke in support of Religious Freedom as our country was being founded.

In this blog I will explore various ancient coins that are connected with the Christian Scriptures (mostly the Gospels).  At times I also will make note of various books that will be helpful with this topic.  Under any coin I will post there will be a summary of information for that coin.  Usually it will include:

  • the City the coin was minted;
  • Date of minting or span of years if exact date is not known;
  • the Denomination of the coin;
  • what is found on the front of the coin (Obverse);
  • what is found on the back of the coin (Reverse);
  • a Reference code number that can be used to further identify the coin.

Thanks for visiting site and check back every once and a while to see what new material I have found!

In the Redeemer,

Father Jack

    A connection between God and money that puts money into its proper perspective — that the coins on the eyes of the body depicted in the Shroud of Turin could inform its authenticity is fascinating — please keep it up!!

    What a treat to be able to find out all these things about early coins. Your research is impressive and I will pass the information along to my newly minted coin enthusiasts. Especially the part about the widow’s mite.
