Coins of John Hyrcanus II: another possible Widow’s Mite

Posted in Biblical Coins tagged , , , , , at 11:05 pm by biblicalcoins

What do you do with the coins already minted from a previous ruler but not yet sent out into circulation? Why you just strike the new image right over them and then send them out for use – or so is the theory as to why this coin has the image of two different Hasmonaean styles dies on it.  The coin began as a coin of Alexander Yannai with a lily/anchor on it. Then it was overstruck with the wreath/cornucopia of Hyrcanus II.

The legends of Hyrcanus II on these coins will be more like earlier Hasmonaean coins with the use of a wreath with inscriptions along with the double cornucopia. This type coin would be a candidate for the Widow’s Mite as well as one of the types to be found on the moneychanger table.

Unique Coin of Alexander Jannaeus (lead prutah anchor/cornucopia)

Posted in Biblical Coins tagged , , , , at 5:03 pm by biblicalcoins

Now we will look at another lead prutah of Alexander Jannaeus.   It contains two dies that are also found on Alexander Jannaeus’s bronze coins: the anchor design and the cornucopia design.  The finding of this coin now expands our understanding of the variety of lead coins minted at this time.  They seem to use many of  the same dies available to them because of the minting of the bronze coins. As of the date of this post it is the only specimen found of this type.

At one time this coin was part of the J.P. Fontanille collection.  Fontanille is putting together an Internet based catalogue of various Jewish coins and it is called the Menorah Coin Project.  You can reach this site at www.menorahcoinproject.org and it contains many examples of the coins I have spoken about and will speak about in this blog.

Extremely Rare Lead Coins of Alexander Janneaus (Yannai)

Posted in Biblical Coins tagged , , , , at 10:43 pm by biblicalcoins

In my last post I said that I would show a very different style of lead prutah of Alexander  Jannaeus and here it is!  This style lead coin with circles is extremely rare.  Meaning I think there have been only about twenty-two found so far. Why these designs are different than other prutahs is not known.

I have been calling these coins lead “prutahs” but I should note that I find some ancient coin dealers who would refer to these coins as lead “tesserae.”  This type coin, the tesserae, was the name given to the lead tokens minted by the Romans.  These lead tesserae/tokens were also used to provide help for the poor in obtaining food and other basic items.

Lead Coins of Alexander Jannaeus (Yannai)

Posted in Biblical Coins, Moneychangers tagged , , , , at 9:08 pm by biblicalcoins

There is something rather interesting about some of the coins of Alexander Jannaeus (Yannai). You see some of his coins are made out of lead instead of bronze.  The theory at the moment is that these coins were issued as “tokens” to be given to the poor so that they could buy food and other necessary items.  It may have been his way to win over the support of the general population.

When these type coins were first found they were thought to only have an image on one side. But as more were discovered it was clear that images and/or inscriptions were to be found on both sides.  Because they were made out of lead they do not hold their images/inscriptions well over time and all the ones I have seen are always in very poor condition. The most general style found at the moment is the anchor/inscription design similar to the coin shown on my last post. There are also some very rare varieties and I will show an example in my next post.

Coins of Alexander Yannai: the actual Widow’s Mite?

Posted in Biblical Coins, Moneychangers tagged , , , , , at 8:25 pm by biblicalcoins

Alexander Yannai was a powerful ruler, greatly expanding the territory of Judea.  Seemingly, because of this expansion, he will make some changes to the traditional way the Hasmoneans minted their coins.  They will be bilingual in many cases, using both Palaeo-Hebrew and Greek inscriptions. He will also make use of symbols on his coins that the newly conquered lands would be familiar with such as the anchor, which is a symbol that was used by the previous Seleucid dynasty on their coins.

99% of the time, if you ask an ancient coin dealer for a widow’s mite, you will be given a coin from this ruler.  The reason this coin is chosen, even though it was issued about 75 to a 100 years before Jesus of Nazareth walked the earth, is that it was minted in such great numbers.  So common is this coin that even today you can purchase it for a very reasonable price.  Therefore, this is a coin that is clearly present on the money changers table during the time of Jesus and is a very strong candidate for being the actual coin used by the widow.

Coin of Judah Aristobulus: the town of Nazareth converts to Judaism

Posted in Biblical Coins tagged , , , , , at 10:32 pm by biblicalcoins

Judah Aristobulus I was ruler for one year.  He was only supposed to be the High Priest but he grabbed the royal title from his mother who had been appointed by John Hyrcanus I.  From a Biblical point of view his reign is important because he will conquer the land of Galilee and make the people there convert to Judaism.  In this way the town of Nazareth, which will play an important part of the Infancy Narrative, will be under Jewish control.

His coins will be hard to find not only because he ruled for just one year but also because he will use a double cornucopia motif that other Hasmonaean rulers will also favor. You will need to find a coin that has clear lettering on it to distinguish it from other Hasmonaean ruler coins. Because of it size and use it will be a candidate for the Widow’s Mite as well as a coin that could be found on the money changers table.

The coin of Antiochus VII/John Hyrcanus I

Posted in Biblical Coins tagged , , , , , at 9:20 pm by biblicalcoins

I am still considering the life and coins of John Hyrcanus I and would be remiss unless I mentioned the transitional coin minted while Antiochus VII of the Seleucid empire was in control of Judea.  There is a real question as to who proposed this coins design. Was it Antiochus VII who chose not to put his image on the coin like the others he was minting as a sign that he was being considerate of the Jewish people?  Or were these coins minted by Hyrcanus himself and bear the name of Antiochus as a sign of cooperation? Either way it is generally agreed upon that these coins were minted in Jerusalem and therefore this becomes another candidate for the Widow’s Mite.  It also represents the first use of the permission that the Jewish community received to mint their own bronze coins.  They would however still be using the silver coins of the Seleucid empire.

The lily found on this coin was a familiar symbol for the people of Jerusalem. It was a decoration found on two of the main pillars at the entrance to the Temple.  Lily symbols also decorated other doorways in the temple and they were found on various Temple furniture.  In the book of the Prophet Hosea the Lily was a symbol of Israel.

More about John Hyrcanus I: Mt. Gerizim

Posted in Biblical Coins tagged , , , at 10:53 pm by biblicalcoins

I know that this coin dates far beyond our Widow’s Mite era. I chose to present it because it does show Mt. Gerizim and is connected with the reign of John Hyrcanus I from my previous post. This is the holy mountain for the people of Samaria and the place of worship of God.  But it was John Hyrcanus who came and destroyed the temple on Mt. Gerizim in an effort to have all worship in Jerusalem.  Memory of this destruction lingered on and even in the time of Jesus the anger over this event was a problem for pilgrims from Galilee journey through Samaria to Jerusalem to worship.  In one scripture passage we read that Jesus could not enter a city because his destination was the temple in Jerusalem and not Mt. Gerizim (Lk 9:51ff). And in the Gospel of John, when talking with the woman at the well, she made reference to Mt. Gerizim as the place of worship.

Possible Widow’s Mite: Coins of John Hyrcanus I

Posted in Biblical Coins tagged , , , , , at 11:19 pm by biblicalcoins

John Hyrcanus I began his reign with a desire to bring back together the people and land that he considered part of the Jewish heritage.  Even though it seems that the Jewish people were given the right to mint their own coins it will be John Hyrcanus I who will be the first Jewish leader to do so.  What is interesting with his coins is that they not only mention that he is the High Priest but also note a body of people called the “Council of the Jews.”  It is not known exactly known whether this group of leaders was similar to the Sanhedrin of our Lord’s time, or some other form of leadership group.

I also want to mention that this era of coins that are now ascribed to John Hyrancus I has been a widely debated topic.  I have given you current numismatic thinking and if you get to read other older articles or book on these coins you will find that some coins had been ascribed to other Jewish leaders who minted coins at a later date.  I mention this because it will always be possible that new research will generate new theories, which is true for most ancient coins but especially with these!

This coin would be a possible Widow’s Mite as well as a coin to be found on the money changers table.

Hasmonaean Coin candidates for the Widow’s Mite

Posted in Biblical Coins tagged , , , , , at 10:27 pm by biblicalcoins

We will now turn to the Hasmonaean coins and examine them in light of their being possible candidates for the Widow’s Mite. Even though many of these coins would have existed about 100 years before the time of Jesus of Nazareth they are still solid candidates for being the Widow’s Mite. Coins are durable, in fact, many still exist today in fine shape. We know from the examination of coin hordes that the Hasmonaean circulated widely in the land of Judea.  One coin horde was discovered in the bottom of a well – about 200,000 of the coins mostly minted by Alexander Jannaeus.  It is not known why so many of these coins were there. Was it a hidden treasure and a safe place to hide them? Was there some type of custom like we have today of throwing coins in a well for luck or some other reason? We may never know.

There will be five rulers that we will consider in the posts that will follow. The rulers are: John Hyrcanus I; Judah Aristibulus I; Alexander Jannaeus; John Hyrcanus II and Mattathias Antigonus. They each minted coins and one of the rulers Alexander Jannaeus, will absolutely flood the area with his coinage. In fact if you approach an ancient coin dealer today and ask for a Widow’s Mite you will most likely be shown a coin minted by Alexander Jannaeus! But since you are reading this blog you have a lot more information and know that there are many candidates for such a coin!!!
