Pontius Pilate coin image on the Shroud of Turin?

The Shroud of Turin is constantly being studied and in amazing detail.  One such study has surfaced an issue that this blog should present because it involves an ancient coin.  It seems that there are definitely round flat objects over the eyes. Further study seems to indicate a design on the object over the right eye and some letters.  The object seems to look like a “lituus,” a priestly instrument that is found on coins of Pontius Pilate.  When the letter fragments were examined with this some find that they also matched letters on the coin. A picture of the coin follows:

pilate-h649.jpg

  • Procurator: Pontius Pilate
  • Date: 30/31 AD
  • Denomination: Prutah
  • Obverse: Lituus
  • Reverse: Wreath
  • Reference: Hendin 649

As you can imagine, the shroud in general, and these coin findings in particular, are both highly debated topics and not one that this blog would ever hope to answer. I merely wanted to present the issue here because it does involve an ancient coin that is connected to a Biblical subject.
